This workshop titled “Empowering Women for Sustainable Climate Solutions through Urban Gardening” was successfully held on December 30th and 31st, 2024, in Hargeisa, Somaliland. The event aimed to educate and empower women by providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement sustainable urban gardening practices. This initiative was a collaborative effort to address climate change and promote environmental sustainability through community engagement.
The session included a keynote address by an expert Mr. Saed Hussein Yusuf who is the deputy General Manager of SOMGAS company, who discussed the impact of urban gardening on reducing carbon footprints and improving air quality, as well as the impact of defforestation on the environment and how the LPG is saving the atmosphere. Participants were introduced to the basics of urban gardening, including soil preparation, plant selection, and sustainable gardening techniques.
The first morning session focused on hands-on activities. Participants were divided into small groups and engaged in practical demonstrations of planting and maintaining urban gardens. The session emphasized the use of eco-friendly materials and organic methods to ensure sustainability. Participants also learned about the benefits of certain plants for air purification and their positive impact on indoor air quality.
The second morning session began with a recap of the previous day’s activities, followed by an interactive session on the social and economic benefits of urban gardening. Women shared their personal experiences and discussed how urban gardening could improve community cohesion and provide economic opportunities. A panel discussion was held with successful female urban gardeners who shared their journeys and offered practical advice.
The final session of the workshop focused on creating action plans. Participants were guided on how to set up their own urban gardens and encouraged to form local gardening groups to support each other. The workshop concluded with a pledge by all participants to implement the knowledge gained and promote sustainable urban gardening within their communities.
The “Empowering Women for Sustainable Climate Solutions through Urban Gardening” workshop was a resounding success. It provided invaluable knowledge and practical skills to women, empowering them to take active roles in climate solutions. The event fostered a sense of community and highlighted the critical role of women in promoting environmental sustainability. Participants left the workshop inspired and equipped to trees to make a positive impact on their environment through urban gardening.
